I’m getting older…

Recently I had a moment of clarity. I’m getting older… How did this happen?  Why didn’t someone warn me?  This past week we had opportunity for several nights of pick-up basketball.  Another associate pastor and I challenged our Student Ministries Pastor and Childrens Pastor to a game.  6 games later we left with a perfect record.  0-6… I mistakenly declared we would play the games to 21… I learned that’s too long of a game for someone my age.. 5 of the 6 games, we beat the younger team to 10 points, only to fold miserably at the end.

A few nights later, after advil and rehab, we played again and added a few players.  This time my son was playing… He just turned 14 and I have to say that I’m finding it difficult to guard him and box him out too.  I’m getting older… I’m not ready for that…

We’re interviewing candidates for an associate youth position at our church and I realize that I am now twice the age of some of the candidates… I could be their father. How did this happen?

My saving grace on the court of basketball is that my son is going to be a monster as he grows through high school.  My revenge on the youth and children’s pastors of the world will be to have my son play in my stead.  Now that sounds like a plan…

That reminds me of the word “legacy”.  We all want our lives and influence to go beyond our lifetime… we want to make a difference.  I’m honored to serve in a church family that includes a significant number of people in 5 generations.  We just finished running a demographic report that identified more that 70 adults who are active in our church and are over the age of 80 years old. This fact has created a legacy and heritage that provides strength and stability for our entire church family.  One generation will praise your works to the next….. what a great verse from Scripture.

I’m getting older and I’m fine with it… because I see the gathering of generations even in my own family and I’m blessed.  I still expect to beat the Youth and Childrens pastor at basketball the next time I play…. I’m getting older, but I’m also stubborn….
