So this was the year we were taking the family on a cross-country family road trip. I had 2 weeks of vacation at Christmas and we determined to celebrate Christmas at both parents houses this year. The track from Oklahoma to Alabama to Virginia back to Oklahoma spanned 12 states and the District of Columbia and almost 3000 miles. I haven’t driven that much in a long time. It was a great trip and it will be a memory for our family for our lifetime.
On the way back to Oklahoma, we decided to take a more northerly route and passed through an area of the country our kids had never been through. As we traveled through Indiana, I noticed a sign on the interstate for the town of Santa Claus, Indiana. I had watched a show on the Discovery Channel about the birth of the modern theme parks in America and I knew that Holiday World, one of the original theme parks, was located in Santa Claus, Indiana.
I couldn’t help myself, so I turned off the interestate…
The Land Between…That’s the title of a book by Jeff Manion, a pastor in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He gave an inspiring message at the Willowcreek Leadership Summit this year, and I’ve spent the last few weeks reading and reflecting on his message. The book is an excellent resource for people who find themselves in a difficult transitional state: The college student who is trying to figure out the next step after graduating, the middle-aged couple caring for aging parents and launching kids into adulthood, the business man or woman who has been downsized and is waiting for the next job opportunity. You get the picture. The more I think about it, if we’re not going through a difficult transition in our life at present, we can be assured one is just around the corner.
